Most police forces have a forensic lab or Hi-Tech Crime Unit which is responsible for the majority of, if not all, mobile phone examinations that take place internally. With mobile phones increasingly being used in criminal activity it is usual that a submitted case tends to have more than one phone to examine and sometimes over 100, especially if an organised operation has taken place. The forensic lab may get a build up of mobile phones awaiting forensic examination but the experienced personnel in the lab will have a portfolio of other roles and responsibilities that also require their expertise.
A large percentage of all the mobile phones submitted to the forensic lab are for relatively low level crime and may not contain any information that is considered to be of evidential value, however, they will always be treated in the same way and follow a rigorous forensic process.
At Radio Tactics we have been working closely with forensic labs to help ease the pressures and to provide a solution which allows frontline officers to carry out examinations on all the mobile phones to get immediate results.
Aceso examines the mobile phone handset, SIM card and memory card and allows the content of these to be previewed before deciding whether evidential media should be created or not.
Aceso can be used by officers who have no expertise in the forensic field as a process is followed at all times and is an extremely secure way to extract information from the mobile phone without compromising any future examinations and keeping a complete audit trail of who, what and when the acquisition took place.
In addition, Radio Tactics has developed
Apollo, a product which checks the status of property and returns a result within seconds to say if that item has been lost or stolen while also identifies the lawful owner if known. This can be used by frontline officers who do not have direct access to the NMPR and need to know if specific items are stolen which in turn reduces crime and fear of crime in local areas. This may also help to reduce the number of mobile phones being sent to the forensic lab.
