In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the US in 2001 and the UK in 2005 it became apparent that there were gaps in intelligence gathering which had allowed terrorists to enter the country, plan and carry-out the attacks and even get a pilots licence, all without detection. It is becoming increasingly common that they not only have to gather information regarding the enemy and their resources, but also on internal personnel who may be stealing from the military stores.
